The Stephanie gate opens onto a summer that most guides get wrong. The received version reads like a country-club brochure: golf, views, pool, repeat. The version residents actually live is a vertical one. It starts at the trailhead on the south edge of Henderson before sunrise, moves back up through the Valle Verde or Stephanie entry by mid-morning, and by evening drops ten minutes down the hill into an open-air calendar that runs six nights a week from June through September.
That vertical band, from Sloan Canyon at the bottom to DragonRidge at the top, is the real shape of a Highlands summer. The community works best as base camp, not destination. Here is how the week actually assembles.
The Dawn Window Just Got Slightly Harder To Use
Anyone who has lived inside the gates for a full summer already knows the rule: the desert is yours between roughly 5:30 and 8:00 a.m., and after that it belongs to the sun. What has changed for 2026 is the access, and it is worth getting right before you drive out at 5:15 with a headlamp.
Nawghaw Poa Road and the parking area at the end of the road are temporarily closed from November 12, 2024, to November 11, 2026, during construction of the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Contact Station. Petroglyph Canyon Trail and the 101 Trail have been rerouted and parking moved to Democracy Drive. If your muscle memory still wants to point the car at Nawghaw Poa, retrain it now. The new trailhead sits at the intersection of Division Drive and Nawghaw Poa road, and the reroute is signed but new enough that first-timers overshoot it in the dark.
A few things worth knowing before you go:
- Summer temperatures typically exceed 100 degrees. Always pack extra water, wear long loose clothing and sunscreen. The Petroglyph Canyon trail is open sunrise to sunset.
- Petroglyph Canyon has a limitation of no more than 20 people in the canyon at one time to protect and conserve the wilderness character of the North McCullough Wilderness. On a Saturday in October that matters. In July at 6:00 a.m., you will likely have the panels to yourself.
- No pets are permitted on the trail unless they are service animals. Only hiking is allowed on this trail. Dogs and bikes belong on the McCullough Hills side.
- The main trail is the McCullough Hills Trail, an 8-mile stretch between upper Henderson and Anthem. This is where the mountain bikers and trail runners go, and it is the closer of the two systems to the community.
The conservation area itself is not small. The 48,438 acre national conservation area forms the southern mountainous skyline of Las Vegas and the City of Henderson. That skyline is the view most Highlands residents pay for at night. Walking into it before breakfast is one of the quiet privileges of living here.
The Ten-Minute Geometry Nobody Prices In
The gates matter for security. They also, quietly, dictate what a Tuesday evening looks like.
Home by 7. Change. Out the Stephanie gate, right on Valle Verde, left on Paseo Verde, and you are pulling into The District at Green Valley Ranch before your dashboard tells you the trip has started.
That is the actual driving reality, and it is why the community's evening rhythm is not organized around the Strip. The Strip is a special-occasion decision. The District is a Tuesday one. The District is a mixed-use development that serves as a community hub, offering a unique blend of shopping, dining, and entertainment options with a pedestrian-friendly design. Residents who came here from Manhattan Beach or Scottsdale usually take a summer to realize the outdoor promenade format is doing more work in their week than the golf membership.
What The District Is Actually Programming This Summer
The reason to know the specifics is that most of it is free, most of it is weekly, and most of it does not survive on the tourist calendars. The summer calendar includes the weekly farmers market, Fit4Mom Stroller Strides, and the monthly artisan Makers Hive Market. Movies on The Green, presented by Urth Caffé, is a free weekly outdoor movie series.
The Sunday morning slot is the one that has quietly become a Highlands habit. Fitness on The Green runs every Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m., led by top fitness instructors and catering to all levels and ages, with yoga through Aerie, pilates with Las Vegas Pilates, and strength and cardio with Fit4Mom. If you have a house guest in from a colder city, this is the demonstration you want to give them. It is a Sunday morning outside, in July, in Henderson, and people are doing pilates on a lawn.
A short note on the dinner default. Featured dining includes King's Fish House, Lucille's, P.F. Chang's China Bistro, The Cheesecake Factory, Balboa Pizza Company, Crazy Pita Rotisserie & Grill, Panera Bread and more. King's is the one that gets used the most by residents who want a real dinner without a Strip drive, and the patio works past sunset when the wall temperatures finally start to give.
When The Night Wants A Bigger Room
Roughly fifteen minutes further down, Water Street is the second gear. It is where the city puts the events that would not fit at The District.
Water Street Plaza was recognized as "Best Outdoor Family Events Venue" in KNPR's Best of the City 2024 awards and stands out as Henderson's premier entertainment destination. Located in the heart of Henderson, this versatile outdoor venue hosts a variety of special events, including festivals, concerts, sports viewing parties and other community-related programs. It complements the adjacent America First Center, the practice home to the Henderson Silver Knights.
The specific feature worth knowing about is the screen. The intimate amphitheater provides a top-tier audience experience with stadium seating, along with stunning audio-visual and lighting features. The lower plaza's viewing area and 42-foot-wide digital screen are the perfect spot for movie screenings and sports watch parties. A 42-foot screen is the size of two neighboring house facades. During a Golden Knights road playoff run, that is the room you want.
The Piece Arriving Inside The Gates
The community is not static this year. The upcoming Four Seasons Private Residences Las Vegas, set to debut in 2026, will be nestled within the guard-gated community of MacDonald Highlands, developed in partnership with Azure Resorts & Hotels and Luxus Developments. The scale is not trivial. Four Seasons Private Residences Las Vegas will feature 171 high-rise residences and six standalone villas, boasting contemporary desert design and resort-style amenities.
The reason to mention it in a summer post is that the amenity list changes the local calculus for residents who already live here. Planned amenities include a signature restaurant, a wine bar, private chef services, private wine cellars, multi-level resort-style pools, cabanas, an event lawn, pet and auto spas, a gym, and a spa with a sauna, steam room, whirlpool, and lap pool. There will also be a library, screening room, community boardroom, and catering services. A signature restaurant and a wine bar inside the gate is a very different thing from a signature restaurant fifteen minutes away. Residents who currently drive down to The District for a glass of something after 9 p.m. will have a shorter walk.
The Piece That Was Already Here
The country club is the constant that anchors the daytime side of the summer. MacDonald Highlands is a guard-gated community and is home to DragonRidge Country Club, which opened in 2000. The neighborhood surrounds the award-winning DragonRidge Country Club, giving residents access to a full range of upscale amenities, including a world-class 18-hole championship golf course.
In practice, the summer play at DragonRidge is early or late. Tee times before 7 a.m. or twilight rounds after 5 p.m. are the two windows where the desert cooperates. The tennis and fitness facilities pick up the middle of the day for the members who prefer indoor air between the two golf windows.
The Read For Residents
The thesis, restated: the value of a Highlands summer is not the fact that you have a pool and a view. Nearly everyone selling homes in Henderson above three million dollars can claim both. The value is the geometry. You have a wilderness trailhead a fifteen-minute drive south, a full evening calendar a ten-minute drive down the hill, a public plaza with a 42-foot screen a bit further, and a country club and, soon, a Four Seasons amenity deck inside your own gate. Very few luxury communities in the American West stack those four layers within that radius.
The residents who use the summer well are the ones who treat the gate as a base, not a boundary. They are out before 7:00 a.m. on the Petroglyph Canyon reroute, back inside for a mid-morning swim, at DragonRidge for a late lunch, and on The Green at The District for a Saturday movie or a Sunday pilates class. That week is available to anyone with a Valle Verde or Stephanie gate clicker. It just is not obvious from the brochure.
